October 2015 - Going on me travels

Sorry boys and girls, a lack of posts this month as I'm taking time out with the family. The last week of October Tbolt, Tindog and Darmon Richter will head to Latvia and Lithuania for a little road trip.

Watch this space, good stuff to follow - Monster Munch, Mars Bars and cameras are packed....

But in the meantime the kids loved Willington Cooling Towers - the nipper said "they are called cooling towers coz they are cool !"

Billinge Hospital, Wigan - May 2015

I live up the road from Wigan, I've only been 5 times in my whole life, everything I know about Wigan came from Stuart Maconie's book Pies and Prejudice - I have however had the delight of the smell of Wigan's Uncle Joe's Mint Balls, this lovely lovely smell can be smelt when you change trains at Wigan to get to Liverpool from Bolton *

Anyway Team Weasel was headed to Wigan this damp day - Zer081, myself and the legend that is simply known as The Judderman. Breakfasts skipped we shot off for some overly ripe NHS derp in what is left of Billinge Hospital.

Billinge Hospital, was originally a workhouse, founded in 1837 as Wigan Poor Law Union, later a maternity hospital and finally closing in 2004, come 2015 the hospital was been demolished bar one building - and this is it.

Even given that there is not much left of the place, I still say you can't beat a good derelict hospital, they never disappoint.

It's been thrashed to an inch of its life, the floors are rotten (not deadly), it is to put it simply - stripped bare but rather good.

Strangely photogenic, yet not much left of the place 8/10 extra points for a walk in.

* you have to be early, preferably before 9am - It is a smell sent from heaven, no it is heaven - except your in Wigan and Wigan is a little poo, as is Bolton but Bolton sadly does not have that early morning mint ball smell - more kebabs, piss and vomit.

Sherdley Remec, St Helens - July 2014

We visited a place of zombies and finding it zombie free it was sadly found to be gathering paintballers at a rapid pace. We made our excuses and left.

Scratching our heads we decided to make the short drive on to St. Helens, one party member down at this point I should add. It turns out you either love St. Helens or don't and our honorable chap voted with his feet, despite my protesting that you can't really write off a whole town.

Apparently you can....

Well Sherdley Remec, what can you say about this place other than it was derp in 2011 and it hasn't improved with age and is a real blight on the landscape.

With cars parking up and gentlemen wandering onto site every so often its either a gay cruising area or drug drop off area, something was a miss.

Chernobyl - part 5, Tiptoe Thru The Dust of Disaster

As I slowly wade thru the photographs of our recent trip to Chernobyl and Pripyay it started to dawn on me that we need to go back, this place seems to have some kind of weird draw on me, given we only saw a small part of the zone over our two days - we or I need to go back.

So much to see, so much to take in, so much more photos, I could, should and didn't take, places we didn't get to see, buildings missed, or photographs I just cocked up.

Hopefully I snatched a few photos that others haven't taken before me or perhaps I have a new take on what can be seen in Chernobyl and Pripyat, perhaps someone will see my pictures and it will inspire them or perhaps you to make the trip ??

Winter was hard work, maybe a summer trip next time or perhaps Autumn ?

Given that even the deserted class rooms of Pripyat had icy floors, summer would be nice.

I need to tiptoe through the dust again and not struggle thru the snow.

Newsome Mills - March 2013

Yorkshire, damp, cold, miserable.

We came, we saw, we bogged off !

We turned up and to be honest it had a big spikey fence and just couldn't be bothered, I think we have been a little spoilt of late with easy walk-ins and tours of Chernobyl.

Newsome Mills

Newsome Mills

So a fail, due to lack of interest, old age and sheer unenthusiastic sunday hangover.

Bradley Garrett was recently quoted in GQ as saying that very few people keep exploring after age 40, this weekend I can understand why many forty-somethings sit at home watching the football.
