Bailey Mill, Saddleworth - May 2015

I'd visited Bailey Mill, a few years go and it was one of my first explores.

In the area with Tbolt and we couldn't not pop in, given our first explore of the day in the area was a little bit rubbish to be very honest.

The roof seems to have been replaced in parts with metal sheeting, which was as well as the heavens opened with some of Lancashire's finest Pennine pissy monsoon type rain.

 

The old place seems to be standing up well indeed all things considered, the cellar has been cleared of its monster machines of a bygone age and we strolled thru up to the upper levels with our progress unimpeded.

It's hard to beat good Lancashire millage, get it whilst you can - the recession is apparently over and these old boys will no doubt start being bulldozed at a faster rate than of late.

Still an excellent 8/10 for me.

Saddleworth Yarn Dyers, Delph - May 2015

Bit of a last minute decision to visit this one, visited with Tbolt who had already had an early morning explore, against my fail.

A few of the gang had previously popped in over the last few weeks,  so we headed for the Lancashire hills to what we had been missing and so on with our visit to Saddleworth Yarn Dyers which closed about 2000.

History is a bit thin on the ground on this little place, so on with some pics.















A tad disappointed, we decided to scoot up the road....

St Thomas' Church, Saddleworth - May 2015

If your not into your churches then scroll on, if you are I now have a few on my blog so just type in church in my little search box thing.

Anyway another off the radar church, closed and being looked after by a heritage group. Sadly Saddleworth is famous for all the wrong reasons and to be honest deserves to be explored.





This out of eye sight church was built in 1765 and closed in 1970. These days it is more known as a film and TV location for many productions, recent filming includes Jamaica Inn, Survivors and A Monster Calls.

Cellars Clough Mill, Marsden - Sept 2012

We hadn't intended to visit this place, but on route into Yorkshire over Saddleworth Moor the weather started to go downhill, once a again myself and The Urban Spaceman had struck gold with the crap weather and shocking light.

Into the village of Marsden we went, a rather nice large village often used for film and TV locations including the cult favorite The League of Gentlemen and "comedy gold"? Last of the Summer Wine.

Just off the beaten track, deep in the valley on the outskirts of the village we find Cellars Clough Mill. Built in 1888, it's now sitting rotting in development hell. To be honest this one looks like it was built to stand the test of time and will hopefully survive the current recession to become swanky apartments in what is a rather lovely canal side position (even when its dark miserble and wet outside).

Originally a silk mill, it was powered by a steam beam engine which now is part of the collection of working steam engines at the Bolton Steam Museum

Anyway on with the pics.

This first shot kind of gives the wrong impression, the security on this site was all smoke and mirrors, a little thinking and it was a simple walk in - although it would snooker thieves which is what we want to be honest.

A good little mooch, but to be very honest as derp goes this was just a big damp old ex dark satanic mill with nothing overly exciting to shout about, other than it looked like it may have been used as a cannabis farm at some point and the electricity would still seem to be connected as the 3 phase was merrily buzzing away at the meter.
