Leeds - a lack of art, September 2012

A bit late posting this one, after the graf-fest of Liverpool the day before I jumped on a train into Yorkshire without doing any homework for a mooch round Leeds City Centre.

Sadly Leeds Centre didn't have much to offer in this department, grand architecture yet sterile.

So here is the best of the artwork I found.

I sure, if I did more homework I would find some more, but I had a return ticket via Manchester.....

Duke of Lancaster - Bungle - October 2012

As part of my ongoing personal project to document the "Black Duke of Lancaster Project" by Dudug I returned to Wales to photograph the new artwork addition by Bungle, titled The Voice of Authority.

Must say, I'm still a frustrated I can't get closer to the ship and get some new angles, but its still a bloody great place for shots.

The ship did have a guest photographer, which gives a sense of scale to the ship - lucky bugger !

A return trip by plane is still on the cards, just waiting for a little more graffiti to be done to make it worthwhile.

More to follow....

Horse and Jockey Pub, Saddleworth - Oct 2012

Saddleworth Moor is a grim place to be on a wet and misty day

IMG_0445[1]

Sat on top of Saddleworth Moor are the remains of the Horse and Jockey Pub, nothing remarkable, just a pub that stands burnt out following a fire in 2007.

Built in the 1930s this now derelict pub was frequented by the Moors Murderers Ian Brady and Myra Hindley back in the 1960s.

Between July 1963 and October 1965 child murderers Brady and Hindley murdered 5 children hiding the bodies on the vast and bleak Saddleworth Moor, to this day the body of 12 year old Keith Bennett has never been found.

Cellars Clough Mill, Marsden - Sept 2012

We hadn't intended to visit this place, but on route into Yorkshire over Saddleworth Moor the weather started to go downhill, once a again myself and The Urban Spaceman had struck gold with the crap weather and shocking light.

Into the village of Marsden we went, a rather nice large village often used for film and TV locations including the cult favorite The League of Gentlemen and "comedy gold"? Last of the Summer Wine.

Just off the beaten track, deep in the valley on the outskirts of the village we find Cellars Clough Mill. Built in 1888, it's now sitting rotting in development hell. To be honest this one looks like it was built to stand the test of time and will hopefully survive the current recession to become swanky apartments in what is a rather lovely canal side position (even when its dark miserble and wet outside).

Originally a silk mill, it was powered by a steam beam engine which now is part of the collection of working steam engines at the Bolton Steam Museum

Anyway on with the pics.

This first shot kind of gives the wrong impression, the security on this site was all smoke and mirrors, a little thinking and it was a simple walk in - although it would snooker thieves which is what we want to be honest.

A good little mooch, but to be very honest as derp goes this was just a big damp old ex dark satanic mill with nothing overly exciting to shout about, other than it looked like it may have been used as a cannabis farm at some point and the electricity would still seem to be connected as the 3 phase was merrily buzzing away at the meter.

Liverpool Graffiti Hunting - September 2012

It said in the magazine "Boarding a plane to an unbeknown country makes your mind wonder about all the photographic opportunities your going to encounter. The beautiful architecture, the....."

So I caught a train to Liverpool for a bit of graffiti hunting !

Given that Bolton is only 37 miles from Liverpool, I've only ever been to Liverpool twice in my life and after catching a ferry across the Mersey I'd never been back, until now.

Not sure where I'd spotted this, but I read that Cains Brewery in Toxteth would be a good starting point for the hunt for Scouse artwork and I wasn't disappointed.

With five hours of walking, looking in nooks and crannies these are just a small sample of the photos taken that day, I will return as I'm sure more treasures are awaiting me including the Banksy which had been covered in scaffolding and plastic.
