Phlegm - May Contain Spiders - May 2015

I don't really do spiders, after an unfortunate incident where I was chased around my apartment (naked) by my girlfriends tarantula.

Here is a spider I snapped, just to prove I can take other types of photos.

Anyway, if anyone does read this waffle I post on here they will know I'm a bit of a fan of Sheffield artist Phlegm and so I'd been trying to find his Spider art in some burnt out barn in the outskirts of Sheffield.

Anyway I did, so we went for a look see -  myself, Tindog and that chap Urban Spaceman.

Now then, barn, spider - one spider I rather like a lot.

Phlegm, Sheffield - September 2014

A trip up to Sheffield to visit The Festival of the Mind, to be honest it didn't float my boat, but I simply needed an excuse to go for a drive over to Yorkshire for a mooch.

Before I went for a street art mooch I did pop in to the Castle House exhibition for a butchers at the art by Phlegm, I love this chaps art.

A few shots of Phlegm and I was out into Sheffield for a blind mooch.

Phlegm - The Book

If you wander the streets of Sheffield wondrous things can be found, as I haven't been to Sheffield I wander the t'internet and look in amazement at the work of artist Phlegm

The often massive and always intricate work of Phlegm can be found in a number cities and towns, but also a very collectable book of the artists pen and ink drawings. 80 wonderful pages based on the artists wall paintings of the last few years.

The book is becoming highly prized and is being already sold at highly inflated prices on Ebay, I picked up my copy from Rare and Racy Books. Ordering mail order for the bargain price of £25. and £3.50 postage and packing (within the UK - they do post overseas).

If you buy one book this year, buy this book  - and then jump in the car to Sheffield and hunt the large scale art down.

I cannot stress how good this book is - you will not be disappointed (it is in black and white before anyone gurns).

Chernobyl - part 3, Posters, Pictures, Propaganda, Graffiti

Walking the streets of Pripyat, Chernobyl and someone else has obviously been before you.

After the looters that crept in during and after the fall of the Iron Curtain came the explorers and the graffiti artists.

Some is just scrawl, such as is found the Azure swimming pool.

Some are shadowy figures on buildings, that can be seen through the trees

Chernobyl 2013

Some figures playfully poke fun or tease the person who dares explore the city.

Aside from the peeling paint of the usual city signs are the motivational and propaganda signs and artwork one would, as a Westerner, rightly or wrongly expect to find in a city in a Soviet Union time bubble.

Thankfully the graffiti is minimal, just enough to catch your eye, the Soviet era art a gentle reminder of the fact the your standing in previous empire of the Soviet Union, as well as the nuclear disaster zone that is Pripyat, Chernobyl

Giant Mecanno Bridge, Bolton

Along the route of the old disused Manchester Bolton & Bury Canal, on the edge of Little Lever is a little area forgotten by many whose claim to fame was its name of Nob End.

Nob End, Bolton Canal

Nob End's claim to fame was that in 1936 a major landslip occurred causing a major breach in the canal, two boats were swept down to the River Irwell 30 metres below. Never repaired, the canal whole canal was officially disused in 1961.

However Nob End now has a new claim to fame, a giant Mecanno Bridge.

One the site of an old wooden horse bridge, destroyed over 50 years ago a new bridge is currently being built with giant Mecanno, the 6.4m bridge is being constructed using 400 giant Mecanno pieces and 700 nuts.

The bridge has been designed by artist Liam Curtin and the £90,000. cost paid for by a developer as part of a recent planning agreement with Bolton Council.

Anyway on with some pics

Finally a big shout out to the Manchester Bolton & Bury Canal Society who despite all odds really are starting to make a difference and vast improvements to the canal in and around Little Lever.

- oh and thanks to Coxey for the info.

The Ghost Ship Duke of Lancaster - hit by graf artists

The Ghost Ship of North Wales has been painted by graffiti artists.

Beached at Llanerch-y-Mor, The Duke of Lancaster is known locally at the Fun Ship.

Full details of the work/attack and photos can be found at DuDug

- Its currently thought this may possibly be a publicity stunt by the owners, as despite the video above, painting was also spotted during daylight hours with a scaffolding tower on site.

A brief report also can be found in the local newspaper The Leader

- further info on this Welsh curiosity can by found with my blog, Ghost Ship and then my return by air.

Huncoat hits the news

Not a good day, well in one respect the old power station is highlighted for the ongoing graffiti fest that that it is, I'm a big fan of Huncoat and it was one of my first explores.

But sadly on the other side, people sit up and before we know it a new big fence will no doubt spring up around the site - please noooooo !!!!

- Thanks to Phil Plod for the photo !

So the debate is on, or so they say in the Lancashire Telegraph

- Personally I hope the powers that be leave the place alone, Huncoat is a centre for graffiti artists to battle it out and photographers from around the country visit this place, the site has also often used for photo shoots for sportswear catalogues.

Long live Huncoat !!!!

The Future of Industry

For the record, if you have read the article (or your from the Lancashire Telegraph) explorers and graffiti artists co-exist, they are not one and the same. If in doubt the explorers are the ones with the cameras not the spray cans.

Further Huncoat info can be found here on my previous Huncoat posting.

Stevenson Square, Manchester - April 2012

A return visit to my haunt of Stevenson Square, Manchester and the Northern Quarter.

As part of the Manchester Outhouse Project the art had changed once again and off I shot to Manchester on a damp Sunday afternoon to take in the sights.

- Urban Spaceman was convalescing with a bad dose of Manflu, payback for trying to escape the rather wet weather with yet another holiday in some despot country which sun and cheap beer.
